Wool vs synthetic carpet: the cleaning differences that actually matter

Most advice about cleaning carpet is written as though all carpet is the same material. It is not. Wool and the common synthetics — nylon, polyester, polypropylene — behave differently under water, heat and cleaning chemistry, and the gap is wide enough that the same product can be routine on one fibre and permanently damaging on another.

Wool is a protein fibre, and that changes the chemistry

This is the single most important difference, and it is not a matter of wool being delicate. Wool is a protein fibre, chemically closer to hair than to plastic, and safe only within a narrow pH band around neutral — roughly pH 5 to 8. Outside that band the damage is structural, not cosmetic: strongly alkaline chemistry leaves the fibre brittle and yellowed, an effect called alkaline burn or pH burn, and it does not wash back out.

Plenty of heavy-duty carpet products sit well above pH 8 by design — alkalinity is what makes them good at cutting greasy soil. On nylon that is a reasonable trade-off. On wool it is a slow-motion accident, which is why wool-safe products are a genuinely separate category rather than a marketing label.

Synthetics tolerate more, but stain-resist treatments do not

Nylon, polyester and polypropylene are not protein fibres, so they handle a much wider pH range without that structural harm — which is why heavily soiled synthetic carpet takes a more aggressive pre-treatment than wool could.

There is a catch that often gets missed, though. Most nylon carpet leaves the factory with a stain-resist treatment, and that coating is far less tolerant than the fibre underneath it. Strongly alkaline cleaning strips it off permanently: the carpet survives, but the stain resistance does not. That is a real risk with harsh supermarket products used repeatedly on one spot.

The synthetics are not interchangeable either

Polypropylene, often sold as olefin, is hydrophobic — it repels water — so water-based spills barely stain it, and it resists mould and mildew better than almost any other carpet fibre. But it is also oleophilic: it attracts oil, so greasy marks are the difficult ones, which surprises people told their carpet was stain-proof. It is also less resilient than nylon, so it crushes flat in traffic lanes.

Nylon is the more resilient of the two and takes deep cleaning well, but it has dye sites that acidic dyes bond to, which is part of why some food and drink spills set so stubbornly on it. Our common carpet stains guide covers those spills.

Moisture is the biggest practical difference

Wool is genuinely absorbent: it takes water into the fibre rather than carrying it on the surface, so it holds more moisture from the same clean and releases it more slowly. That single property drives most of the practical care differences.

Slow drying is the risk factor behind musty smells, mildew and, at worst, shrinkage or delamination. Browning and wicking: two ways wool looks worse

Occasionally a wool carpet looks fine while damp, then develops brownish patches or lines as it dries. Two separate mechanisms sit behind that. Wicking is the simpler one: soil deep in the pile or backing travels back up to the surface as moisture evaporates, redepositing where you can see it.

Cellulosic browning is different: it comes from natural plant material, classically a jute backing, releasing lignin when it gets wet and dries slowly. Older wool carpets and traditional rugs are the usual candidates, since jute backings were standard for decades. Both are treatable, generally with an acidic rinse, but both are easier to avoid than to correct — and the cause is the same either way: too much water, too slow a dry.

Soiling looks different on each fibre

Wool hides dirt well. The fibre is opaque, and its scaly outer surface scatters light in a way that disguises soil, so a wool carpet can carry a substantial load of grit and still look presentable. Its natural crimp also lets the pile spring back instead of holding permanent furniture dents.

That is an advantage day to day and a trap over a longer timescale: because the dirt does not announce itself, wool carpets often go far longer between deep cleans than they should, while abrasive grit at the base of the pile keeps cutting the fibre.

How to tell what you actually have

Start with documentation — the original invoice, the manufacturer label, or the specification if the carpet came with the property. Wool is the premium option, so nobody hides it. Where nothing is on paper, a professional identifies fibre by feel and appearance and, where a hidden offcut allows, by a controlled burn test: nylon burns slowly, self-extinguishes and leaves a hard shiny bead, while polypropylene melts away from the flame and keeps burning once it is removed.

What this means when you book a clean

The takeaway is not that wool is fragile or synthetic bulletproof, but that fibre identification should happen before any method or product is chosen — and it is fair to ask any cleaner whether they check.
