How Often Should You Get Your Carpets Professionally Cleaned?
There's no single number that fits every home. How often a carpet needs a professional clean comes down to how much traffic it takes, what's walking across it, and how it's being looked after in between. Here's how to work out a sensible interval for your own carpet.
General guidance
A reasonable starting point
For an average household, once a year is a sensible baseline for a full professional clean. That keeps embedded dirt, everyday grime and general wear from building up to the point where it's visibly affecting how the carpet looks, and it complements whatever vacuuming and spot-cleaning happens week to week.
Busier households usually need to shorten that interval. If there are young kids, pets, or the carpet simply sees a lot of footfall — a hallway, stairs, or a living room that's in constant use — every six months tends to be more appropriate. Regular vacuuming helps a lot between cleans, but it only ever lifts surface debris; it doesn't reach the dirt and residue that settles down into the pile over time, which is what a professional clean is designed to deal with.
What changes the interval
Factors that shorten or extend it
Pets in the house
Fur, dander and the occasional accident all work into the pile faster than everyday household dirt, so homes with pets generally benefit from a more frequent schedule.
Kids and high footfall
Children, frequent visitors, or a carpet that sits on a main route through the house takes more wear than a spare room that's rarely used.
Allergies and sensitivities
If anyone in the house deals with allergies or asthma, keeping carpets cleaned on a tighter schedule is generally worthwhile as part of general household upkeep, alongside regular vacuuming and ventilation.
Light vs heavy use, and colour
A rarely-used spare room can comfortably go longer between cleans. Pale carpets also tend to show dirt sooner than darker ones, even when the actual level of soiling is similar.
Signs to look for
How to tell a clean is overdue
Rather than working strictly to a calendar, it helps to know the signs that a carpet is due a proper clean:
- The carpet looks dull, flat or grubby even straight after vacuuming.
- There's a lingering smell that doesn't lift with normal cleaning or airing the room.
- Traffic lanes — the path from the door to the sofa, say — are visibly greyer or darker than the rest of the carpet.
- Anyone with allergies notices symptoms are worse indoors than they'd expect.
- It's simply been a while and you can't remember the last time it was properly cleaned rather than just vacuumed.
None of these are exact science, but taken together they're a reasonable prompt to book a clean rather than waiting for a fixed date to come round.
Offices and commercial spaces
Commercial carpets need a different schedule
Office and retail carpets are a different case. Far more feet cross them each day than in a typical home, and appearance matters for a different reason — a worn, grubby-looking carpet in a reception area or shop floor reflects on the business. For that reason, commercial spaces usually need a tighter cleaning schedule than a family living room, often on a set contract rather than an occasional one-off, and sometimes as a requirement of a lease, insurance policy or health and safety standard.
See our commercial carpet cleaning page for how that typically works for Dublin offices and businesses.
